The original idea was to discuss the application of the polysystem theory and more recent work done by members of the Unit for Culture Research at Tel Aviv University primarily, but not exclusively, on medieval textual production. Despite the huge impact that the polysystem theory has had since its first formulation in the late 1970s on translation studies around the world, it has received much less attention in medieval studies, even though translation has long been one of the major research topics for scholars dealing with the literary and linguistic heritage of the Middle Ages. Therefore, the workshop was conceived as a forum where the ideas and the theoretical tenets put forth by the polysystem theory and culture research, with their focus on the interrelatedness of all the components making up a culture, could be discussed with reference to a variety of case studies pertaining to various epochs and cultures. All the essays in this collection share a concern with the instrumental and symbolic use of literary texts and aim at raising questions regarding the role of textual activity in the shaping and development of culture. Given the experimental nature of the project, it should be mentioned that the questions raised outnumber the answers provided by the essays. L'idea originale era quella di discutere l'applicazione della teoria dei polisistemi e il più recente lavoro svolto dai membri della Unit for Culture Research dell'Università di Tel Aviv principalmente, ma non esclusivamente, sulla produzione testuale medievale. Nonostante l'enorme impatto che la teoria dei polisistemi ha avuto dalla sua prima formulazione alla fine degli anni '70 sugli studi di traduzione in tutto il mondo, ha ricevuto molta meno attenzione negli studi medievali, anche se la traduzione è stata a lungo uno dei principali argomenti di ricerca affrontato dagli studiosi insieme al patrimonio letterario e linguistico del Medioevo. Il workshop, pertanto, è stato concepito come un forum in cui le idee e i principi teorici proposti dalla teoria e dalla ricerca culturale dei polisistemi, con il loro focus sull'interrelazione di tutte le componenti che formano una cultura, potrebbero essere discussi con riferimento a una varietà di casi studio relativi a varie epoche e culture. Tutti i saggi di questa raccolta condividono l'interesse per l'uso strumentale e simbolico dei testi letterari e mirano a sollevare domande sul ruolo dell'attività testuale nella formazione e nello sviluppo di una cultura. Data la natura sperimentale del progetto, è opportuno ricordare che le domande sollevate superano le risposte fornite dai saggi.
