Il libro si concentra sul lavoro della scrittrice giapponese Enchi Fumiko (1905-1986) e in particolare su una selezione dei suoi ultimi romanzi e novelle ambientati nel mondo delle arti tradizionali dello spettacolo. L'autrice analizza i numerosi riferimenti intertestuali nelle opere di Enchi, non solo in relazione al teatro Kabuki e Noh - in particolare attraverso la sua reinterpretazione di figure centrali come Ono no Komachi e Kikujidō - ma anche per la produzione teatrale di Mishima Yukio. Attraverso un vivace dialogo con studi di genere, studi queer, teorie di performatività e memoria, le opere di Enchi rivelano un uso strategico ed esperto del potenziale espressivo del palcoscenico.
