Marine, burrowers.
1) General view of Dentalium, a scaphopod. Tubular tusk-like shell, open at both ends. At the larger burrowing end one can see: a muscular extensible foot, long slender tentacles (captacula), exploring watery interstices between sand grains to catch food particles (detritus and protozoa), that are conveyed to the mouth.
2, 3) Details of the various systems.
4) Radula at bottom of the oral cavity.
Different larval stages of trocofora (5, 6), veliger (7, 8, 9) and subsequent metamorphic stages (10, 11).
