Marine, freshwater and rarely terrestrial animals.
These crustaceans are usually compressed bilaterally, lack a carapace, have sessile compound eyes, and their thoracic and abdominal limbs are arranged in two groups, the anterior limbs forward, the posterior ones backwards.
Caprella, Caprellidae: external morphology of a male and female: a vestigial abdomen, slender body and appendages.
Gammarus, Gammaridae: it is flattened from side to side, with seven pairs of thoracic walking legs (the first two pairs often enlarged) and six pairs of abdominal limbs, of which the front three pairs are used for swimming and the back three for gliding locomotion on solid surfaces. Gammarids grow to about 5 to 30 mm in length.
