Description
Class Hydrozoa
Siphonophora
1) Stephalia
2) Cupulita (Halistemma)
3) Eudoxia di Muggiaea kochii: in Siphonophora, groups of zooids detaching from the main corm originating new corms (also called eudoxoma); in the past they were considered independent species ascribed to the genus Eudoxia.
Colonies of pelagic hydrozoans, without free medusae and with the highest polymorphism found in Cnidaria. The polypoid and medusoid zooids are so specialized that they can be interpreted as “organs” of a superindividual unit. A pneumatophore (floating, sometimes as a bag with a gland that secretes gas); nectocalices (medusoid natatorial bells); phyllozooids (covering elements); dactylozooids (defensive polyps); gastrozooids (polyps adapted to nutrition); gonozooids (sexual polyps producing fixed medusae).
