Description
Holocaust Remembrance Day was established in Italy by Law no. 211/2000 to preserve and renew the memory of the “extermination and persecution of the Jewish people and of the Italian military and political deportees in Nazi camps.”
The chosen date, January 27, marks the day in 1945 when the Auschwitz concentration camp was liberated.
The collection retraces the initiatives promoted by Ca’ Foscari University of Venice to commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day, each year focusing on a different aspect of this dark chapter in recent history.
To this purpose, the University appointed a Rector’s Delegate for Holocaust Remembrance Day, a role that in 2019 was extended to include the Remembrance Day for the Victims of the Foibe Massacres (Giorno del Ricordo).
The choice of initiatives has, in some cases, been guided by collaboration with other institutions—for instance, in 2014 with the City of Venice—in others, by special anniversaries, such as the 150th anniversary of Ca’ Foscari in 2018.
It has also been shaped by particular circumstances, such as the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, which required all commemorations and conferences to be held exclusively online.
